Why I Prefer Acrylic Signage Over Other Materials

The ability to effectively communicate your brand is key to the success of your business. So, what better way to convey your message than an attractive signage?

A signage is not only useful in locating your business, but it can also be one of the most effective forms of marketing your brand. As an architect that specialises in corporate offices, I have installed acrylic signages across Singapore more than I ever did in the past.

But, with many other materials to display your brand, you might be wondering why I still advise my clients to invest in acrylic signages. So, here’s my two cents in why I’m biased in favour of acrylic signage makers in Singapore.

Acrylic, a versatile material for signage

The purpose of signage is three-fold:

It informs onlookers about what you do

It tells where to find you

It serves as a branding platform

But, while all signs do the same thing, there are huge differences in materials and substrates to be used - and your choice should depend on a number of considerations:

Where will it be displayed?

How long do you intend to use it?

I see acrylic as the most versatile and durable substrate that works for both outdoor and indoor use. It is almost identical to glass - hard, transparent and versatile - only it’s way more resistant to shock, scratching and weathering. It can be easily cut and pliable to be transformed into custom shapes.

In general, acrylic is made from a well-known brand of acrylic sheeting called Plexiglas. Because acrylic is versatile, it can be used for general signs, wall installations as well as for stand-up letters in building exteriors. It can also either be sprayed in different colours or directly printed on.

Here are some applications we can do with acrylic:

3D Signage - A 3D effect can be created by applying cut vinyl or printing on the backside of an acrylic sign. Such technique is called the second surface and is a creative way to add depth to the signage.

Lighted Signage - When illuminated, acrylic signages reflect light at the edges, producing an eye-catching glow that allows them to stand out from the rest.

Lightboxes - Lightboxes are so far the most typical form of outdoor acrylic signage and probably the one you’re most familiar with. A rectangular metal frame with light bulbs in the centre, this signage is made of two coloured acrylic sheets with either printed or vinyl graphics slid between the metal frame.

The result is an illuminated, double-sided sign that’s visible day and night. We often recommend this type of acrylic signage for businesses on the busy roadside.

Acrylic is the best choice for signs that look sophisticated and high-tech. It can last for about five years outdoors when installed in areas protected by overhangs.
